Just Speak 2016 – Part 1

Just Speak 2016 – Part 1

We were excited to hold a Just Speak! event again at this year’s national orientation. This is a chance for church and community leaders to encourage, inspire and challenge our incoming Volunteers as they start their year seeking peace with justice.

The first speaker was Rev. Dr. Reggie Williams, Assistant Professor of Christian Ethics at McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago. Dr. Williams dug in to understanding what racism is, and is not, with plenty of time for Q&A at the end. For more from Dr. Williams, check out his recently published book Bonhoeffer’s Black Jesus: Harlem Renaissance Theology and an Ethic of Resistance (Baylor University Press, October 1, 2014).

Julia Pilkington is an #LVC17 Volunteer and St. Olaf College graduate serving this year in Baltimore at World Relief. Julia is honest and uplifting as she shares about her experience serving as a Legal Assistant in the Immigration Legal Clinic and finding community in Baltimore.

"Working as a legal assistant in an immigration legal clinic in a year when DACA and Temporary Protected Statuses are being dissolved or replaced has put me in a unique learning position – I don’t know that you can be in this position and not leave it changed. These changes on a federal level have immediate impact on individuals that I am in contact with every day – there is nothing left to the abstract. By being the point of contact for the clinic for clients and those seeking legal services, I hear the joys and the fears of many an individual, and I do the best I can to connect with the help they need."
