Digging a Little Deeper at Fall Retreat

The beginning of this year has been challenging for me – I transferred placements early on, my partner and I are doing long distance, and I was trying to authentically engage in a new community where I didn’t feel like I fit in. After the retreat, something had changed – I even felt sad to say goodbye for a week as I went home for Thanksgiving. A bit of reflection on our shared time at the Midwest Fall Retreat, helped me to realize that it was a pivotal moment for me in my journey as a Volunteer. I was a bit apprehensive about the retreat,Read More →

Milwaukee: A City of Many Marvelous (Mis)Adventures

Already, a month and a half of Marvelous Milwaukee (Mis)Adventures has passed for the Steadfast Sextet. When asked what word best describes the past four weeks of life in Venice Williams House, this author’s roommate, Katie Grosh, could only respond, “…whoaa”. I can only agree, Katie; never a truer word has been spoken. However, I must endeavor to put more words together for you, reader, than a simple “whoa”, so that you can share in the many escapades our household has already had in this stunning city. Though not a member of every expedition, I can give a first-hand account of a few journeys thatRead More →

LVC17 Volunteer Spotlight: Tea Čakarmiš

Tea (far right) with Food Justice Housemates! Teodora (Tea) Čakarmiš is an LVC17 Food Justice Volunteer serving at the Urban Ecology Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Tea, an extremely unbiased source, shared that she is from “the number one place to visit in Eastern Europe” – Belgrade, Serbia. As a Food Justice LVC-er, Tea is the most interested in “understanding the intersections of environmental racism, on a local, but also on a global scale.” Tea shared her belief that the “plight that the ‘Global South’ faces due to climate change is… the most important issue that the international community will have to tackle in the future. Preservation ofRead More →

LVC16 Volunteer Spotlight: Hannah Uitenbroek

Milwaukee LVCer Hannah Uitenbroek is working at All Peoples Church as their Food Justice Organizer. Hannah shares the following about her year: “Working as the Food Justice Organizer at All Peoples Church, I have had the privilege of entering into a church community and the community of Milwaukee. I was dealing with my own anxiety and depression. At the church, the gospel music struck my heart and soul and people were kind to the new person that was assigned to them for a year. Two weeks into being in Milwaukee, the riots in Sherman Park occurred after Sylville Smith, another black man, was killed by police. ThingsRead More →

Purchase and Sale Signed for Dorothy Day House!

We are excited to share the news that LVC completed its purchase of the Dorothy Day House in Milwaukee and also its capital campaign for this purpose! Here is a bit more from Sam Collins, president of LVC, on just what this purchase means for LVC & the Milwaukee community. The purchase of the Dorothy Day House will cut LVC’s program expenses by $5,000 to $10,000 per year which will make LVC more sustainable and allow us to act creatively in Milwaukee in pursuit of our mission as a community of faith uniting people to work for peace with justices. And speaking of acting creatively inRead More →
