Organization Description Trinity Lutheran Congregation is a member of the ELCA and has been in the Minneapolis Cedar-Riverside neighborhood since 1868. It is currently the only viable Christian congregation in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood of over 9000 residents. Trinity is committed to being a Christian presence in the C-R neighborhood and a Christian witness to the larger world. Trinity is a presence and an active participant in the neighborhood, through various collaborative initiatives and participation in neighborhood meetings and activities. Trinity's mission is reflected in our mission statement: Nurturing wholeness ' and holiness ' in Cedar-Riverside. We believe that God is big enough for all, only with different names and faces. Therefore, in this neighborhood of primarily East-African Muslims Trinity does not feel a need to convert anyone to Christianity. Our mission is to accompany our brothers and sisters of Cedar-Riverside, help them become who God intends them to be, and break down the barriers of faith, race, language, culture, tribe, and nation.
Position Description The Volunteer will be responsible for running Trinity's Safe Place: Homework Help program. Homework Help is a free drop-in program for ages K-12 which offers students help with the homework they bring in each day.The responsibilities include: recruiting tutors; recruiting students; training tutors; scheduling tutors; tracking tutor hours; and other administrative duties. Tutors generally come from Augsburg College and the University of Minnesota, both of which are within a couple of blocks of Trinity. Contacts with appropriate departments at each school already exist and Trinity is well-respected at both institutions. Students know about our program through word-of-mouth and flyers that are distributed throughout the neighborhood.
