Food Justice

A Day in the Life

Somehow, it is already October and we are almost two months into the year of service with LVC. The leaves are changing, the air is getting chillier, and I am still getting used to my new life here in the Twin Cities! My name is Bex Klafter, I’m originally from New York City (yup, I grew up in Manhattan), and I graduated from Carleton College in June with a BA in Environmental Studies. Through LVC, I’m living with 5 other volunteers in “Redeemer House” — right across the street from where I work at Redeemer Center for Life! RCFL, for short, is a non-profit focusingRead More →

LVC17 Volunteer Spotlight: Tea Čakarmiš

Tea (far right) with Food Justice Housemates! Teodora (Tea) Čakarmiš is an LVC17 Food Justice Volunteer serving at the Urban Ecology Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Tea, an extremely unbiased source, shared that she is from “the number one place to visit in Eastern Europe” – Belgrade, Serbia. As a Food Justice LVC-er, Tea is the most interested in “understanding the intersections of environmental racism, on a local, but also on a global scale.” Tea shared her belief that the “plight that the ‘Global South’ faces due to climate change is… the most important issue that the international community will have to tackle in the future. Preservation ofRead More →

LVC16 Volunteer Spotlight: Hannah Uitenbroek

Milwaukee LVCer Hannah Uitenbroek is working at All Peoples Church as their Food Justice Organizer. Hannah shares the following about her year: “Working as the Food Justice Organizer at All Peoples Church, I have had the privilege of entering into a church community and the community of Milwaukee. I was dealing with my own anxiety and depression. At the church, the gospel music struck my heart and soul and people were kind to the new person that was assigned to them for a year. Two weeks into being in Milwaukee, the riots in Sherman Park occurred after Sylville Smith, another black man, was killed by police. ThingsRead More →

Catching Up With Alumni: Peter Spuit and Kaydee Kirk

Kaydee Kirk (’98-’99) and Peter Spuit (’99-’00) are two Lutheran Volunteer Corps alumni who live in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Kaydee is a graduate of Augsburg College and lived in Dag Hammarskjold House during her LVC year in Washington, D.C., and Peter is a graduate of Luther College and lived in Imani House during his LVC year in Minneapolis. We caught up with the two of them recently to hear what they’ve been up to and how LVC has continued to impact their lives. Both consider their service year with LVC to be transformational and greatly appreciate the many ways that LVC shaped them. Can you speakRead More →

Volunteer Spotlight: Maria Cruse, Shalom High School

Current Milwaukee LVCer Maria Cruse is serving in Milwaukee as a math co-teacher at Shalom High School. Maria lives in the Dorothy Day House. This is a photo of Maria from the Winter’s Farmers Market. Speaking of food, Maria says the following about the power of food to bring together a community, something she’s learned through LVC, “Having community meals has prompted my housemates and me to be more sustainable with our community meal costs and has been an opportunity to cook and eat intentionally. It’s also a time where I can share one of my passions with others – food! I get to learnRead More →

Lutheran Volunteer Corps (LVC)
The impact of the Lutheran Volunteer Corps is made possible through a powerful partnership among placement organizations, dedicated fellows, and generous supporters. Our placement partners are mentors and collaborators who provide fellows with opportunities to engage in meaningful work. Fellows bring energy and fresh perspective to their roles. At the heart of LVC, the fellows choose to live intentionally, serve wholeheartedly, and grow spiritually and personally throughout their year. Their courage to step into unfamiliar spaces, embrace challenge, and live out their values inspires transformation. The guidance and support they receive help them deepen their understanding of service.None of this would be possible without the unwavering support of our donors, who help us sustain meaningful change. Your generosity ensures that this work continues. Together, we are building a stronger community every year.Apply Here to Become a Fellow>>> lutheranvolunteercorps.org/the-program/#Apply Here to Become a Placement Partner >>> lutheranvolunteercorps.org/the-program/# ...
