Fighting the “January Blues”

Around this time of year, most people find it fairly easy to slip into the so called “January blues.” The holidays are over, vacation time has run out, and all of the excitement of the New Year has subsided by now. For many parts of the country – definitely here in Chicago – the days are cold and darkness comes far too quickly each night. In addition to the settling back into the regular grind, this time can often be a fairly lonely one. I know many of us in the Lutheran Volunteer Corps community likely have made voyages home over the last few monthsRead More →

LVC17 Volunteer Spotlight: Grace Corbin

Grace (right) with Twin Cities Volunteer Emily Campbell (left) at the Pipeline 3 Protest organized by Honor the Earth and MN350 One fun fact about #LVC17 Volunteer Grace Corbin is that she is one of three twins serving in the Twin Cities this year (LVC Staff Member Deirdre Kanzer “promises” she didn’t do that intentionally…). She is from Grantsburg, WI and is a recent alum of Augsburg College (now Augsburg University), where she received a degree in Youth and Family Ministry. She is a huge Harry Potter fan, a body hair advocate, and loves music and volleyball. Grace is serving at the Minneapolis Area Synod ofRead More →

Volunteer Spotlight: Marit Johnson, ELCA Justice for Women

Current Chicago LVCer Marit Johnson is serving this year in the ELCA Churchwide Office, Chicago Office as the Justice for Women Program Assistant. Living in intentional community can be one of the most rewarding and challenging parts of an LVC year. Marit shares, “Practicing patience and active listening is so important when living in community. It’s difficult, but I believe it creates stronger and more honest relationships.” Marit is a graduate of Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, and is from Park River, North Dakota. #LVCVolunteerSpotlightRead More →

New LVC Intern – Jamie Ulrich

Greetings! My name is Jamie Ulrich and I am the LVC National Office’s new intern! I am working as the Social Media Coordinator and will be helping out with managing LVC’s social media platforms, coming up with some new ideas for marketing LVC, and updating our database. I started in mid-January and will be here until mid-April, doing lots of great work for an amazing organization! I am doing my internship at LVC as a participant of the Lutheran College Washington Semester, which is a semester-long program comprised of students from various Lutheran colleges and universities from all over the country. My home school isRead More →

“Brewing Community, Fermenting Love”

Lutheran Volunteer Corps Alumni Aaron Schmalzle and Pastor Jared Witt will soon be opening Castle Church Brewing Company in Orlando, FL. Their tag line “brewing community, fermenting love” is one in the same with their mission: to connect people in intentional relationships and partner with others to do the work of Jesus in their community. In a press release that was shared with LVC, they explain their mission statement like this: “Ferment v. to incite or stir up (trouble or disorder). If you are looking for a God who troubles our complacency and stirs up a movement of love in the world, then Castle Church isRead More →
