Volunteers Engage Their Passions: Immigration & Refugee Services

’17-’18 Volunteer Micaela Laurence at her desk at Lutheran Social Services  During National Orientation this year, Volunteers took a moment to write their hopes, fears, questions, and insights onto post-it notes and place them onto the walls of the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. One read, “How do we work for social justice today?” Part of LVC’s answer to this question is to work where one’s passion lies. Because LVC believes that achieving justice requires progress across many issue areas, and that each area needs talented leaders in the future, LVC places passionate Volunteers with amazing nonprofit organizations across a wide range of socialRead More →

LVC17 Volunteer Spotlight: Morgan Simmons

Morgan (second left), with Koinonia housemates It’s now been more two months since our new Volunteers began serving at their placement sites! For our Volunteers, these months have been  filled with new beginnings, uncomfortable amounts of vulnerability, realizing the importance of intentional budgeting (usually after it’s too late), and finding some peace in that the fact that they’re all doing it together. Volunteer Morgan Simmons is serving this year in Wilmington, DE at Lutheran Community Services and living in the Koinonia House. Morgan is one of a couple of our Volunteers focused on food insecurity, as this year she serves as a Food & Shelter Assistant,Read More →

LVC17 Volunteer Spotlight: Lucas Shurson

Lucas (left) at Trinity on their church work day Although the trail from Yucaipa, California to Omaha, Nebraska seems to be a long one, new Volunteer Lucas Shurson seems to have made the transition well (probably thanks to spending four years developing some Midwestern charm at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN). For his year with LVC, Lucas will be serving Trinity Lutheran Church in Omaha as a Community Connector. As the church’s Community Connector, Lucas’ role is assisting the church’s outreach programs – helping run a couple long-standing outreach programs like Trinity Reads, a partnership program with six different Omaha elementary schools that distributes books to schools,Read More →

LVC16 Volunteer Spotlight: Gabrielle and Bianca Bryant

Gabrielle and Bianca Bryant are current West Coast LVCers and sisters finishing up their year this week. Gabrielle served this year as a Rehabilitation Counselor in the residential program at Transitional Resources – a mental health center that serves people living with severe mental illnesses in Seattle, WA. “My time spent at Transitional Resources demonstrated the importance of mental healthcare. I am currently applying to medical school and I know that my year of service will make me a more informed physician. I will leave Seattle with a greater respect for patience, kindness, and simplicity of living. I will be forever grateful for everyone who was aRead More →
