Before this Campaign Fails, We’ll All Go Down to Jail: LVC Alum Participates in Civil Disobedience

True followers of Jesus can’t help but walk in his footsteps – civil disobedience and all. Ben Brown came to LVC first as a Washington Semester intern from Wittenberg University, and then as a DC LVC Volunteer last year, serving at Faith in Public Life. Faith in Public Life (FPL) is a national network that unites clergy and faith leaders in shaping policy locally and nationally. This year, FPL is heavily engaged in Rev. Dr. William Barber’s revival of the Poor People’s Campaign, participating in acts of civil disobedience and protest across the country for a month of “Moral Mondays”, beginning in May. On May 21st,Read More →

Why A Year of Service Never Ends

A teacher of mine used to say that the why question is very important because it tells you a lot about yourself. June is a busy month at Lutheran Volunteer Corps (LVC) as staff continue to recruit and prepare for the end of one cohort’s year and beginning of another cohort’s year in a few short months. It’s also a busy season for outgoing Volunteers as they think about finishing up their year and what comes next. Incoming Volunteers are busy with summer activities and for many, but not all, thinking about life after graduation. But, the question of why folks consider doing a serviceRead More →

Spirituality, Vocation and Leaving Your Comfort Zone

Mae L’Heureux was born and raised in the Portland, Maine area. She graduated from Assumption College in Worcester, Massachusetts in May 2014 with a degree in Psychology and a minor in Human Services and Rehabilitation Studies. That summer, she joined LVC and served as a Volunteer with the 2014-2015 cohort, serving in Omaha, NE at NAMI Nebraska.   How did LVC impact your life? LVC taught me what matters. It taught me that you don’t grow if you don’t push yourself out of your comfort zone. It taught me that you have to fight hard for what you want, and learn to be okay with lettingRead More →

Reflections from LVC Alumna and Spirituality Mentor

Originally published in “The Door” by the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago (LSTC). Written by Amy Asendorf, M.Div Student and LVC alumna 2014-2015 This year, my Public Church Fellows placement has been with the Lutheran Volunteer Corps (LVC), serving as the Spirituality Mentor to the Chicago house. LVC is a faith community of the ELCA that works for peace with justice by placing volunteers in cities across the United States to serve full-time at social-justice organizations. The three core tenants of the volunteer program are intentional community, justice work, and simple and sustainable living. LVC is also committed to “forming and strengthening alliances withRead More →

Catching Up With Alumni: Peter Spuit and Kaydee Kirk

Kaydee Kirk (’98-’99) and Peter Spuit (’99-’00) are two Lutheran Volunteer Corps alumni who live in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Kaydee is a graduate of Augsburg College and lived in Dag Hammarskjold House during her LVC year in Washington, D.C., and Peter is a graduate of Luther College and lived in Imani House during his LVC year in Minneapolis. We caught up with the two of them recently to hear what they’ve been up to and how LVC has continued to impact their lives. Both consider their service year with LVC to be transformational and greatly appreciate the many ways that LVC shaped them. Can you speakRead More →
