Introducing the Women of LVC Baltimore

Greetings from Simunye! Hannah here. Giving you all a first report on the LVC crew in Baltimore, Maryland. (The photo above is the five of us hanging out at the Inner Harbor. Moving from left to right: Hannah, Laura, Narges, Erin, Clara.) We are a fun bunch of women. All full of passion, determination and wit. We were all strangers to one another not too long ago. But since boarding our flight to Baltimore, I’ve come to know the four women quite well. Here’s a bit about each of them. First off, Laura Lampson. She was the first person I met during National Volunteer Orientation inRead More →

LVC Welcomes New President!

WASHINGTON, DC, September 24, 2018 — After a nationwide search, Lutheran Volunteer Corps (LVC) announces the appointment of its new president, Deirdre Bagley.  Bagley joined LVC for its annual National Orientation and board meeting in Chicago, in August, to transition into the role, which begins officially on October 1. Bagley has spent her career serving nonprofits as CEO, COO, and deputy executive director, for organizations with membership from 60 to 100,000; managing budgets up to $30 million; and leading programs, operations, special events, student and regional programs, training, fundraising, human resources, executive and event speech writing and video scripting, and organizational development. A Working Reputation in Wilmington

What do you get when you throw one person from Oregon, two from Iowa, one from Minnesota, one from Michigan, and one from North Carolina together in a house in Delaware? So far it’s been teasing each other’s accents, discussing the difference between “scotcharoos” and “special K bars,” and wondering when we’re going to run into Joe Biden. Exploring the east coast this first month has been an adventure. One of our first goals in Wilmington was to get to know our neighborhood. We ate our first dinner as a house outside on our front porch. We made an effort to say hello to everyoneRead More →

Junia: Two Programs, One Home

My name is Ahna, and I live in one of the D. C. houses: Junia. It is located in the Petworth neighborhood and it is called home by three Lutheran Volunteers and three Loretto Volunteers. For those of you who don’t know, the Loretto Volunteer Corps is an Catholic volunteer organization. They are a group of spunky feminists who focus on spirituality, sustainability, and social justice. This is the first year where the two programs have come together to share a house, and I feel remarkably lucky to be a part of it. There is no way I can capture everything that has happened forRead More →

TAMVU, TAMEU, TAMWU!  Food and Community at Redeemer House

At National Orientation, our LVC leaders succeeded in preparing us for the challenges of communal living.  As a house, Redeemer spent hours considering our communication styles, our conflict resolution skills, and the goals and expectations we had for ourselves.  However, nothing could have prepared us for just how much fun we would have! For cynical folks like me, this introduction may seem extremely canned and insincere.  Don’t get me wrong, like any LVC house we have ongoing debates, struggles, and conversations around how we want to live, where our priorities lie, and how to spend our money and time.  But I really must emphasize howRead More →

We are pleased to announce the election of the Rev. Yehiel Curry as presiding bishop of the ELCA! Bishop-elect Curry was elected on the fifth ballot with 70.34% of the vote. Ever-living God, strengthen and sustain Bishop-elect Curry, that with patience and understanding he may love and care for your people.
