News from LVC (Page 15)

Welcome to Winona!

Three weeks ago, I moved across the river from my hometown of St. Paul, into a 100-year-old house in Minneapolis. I did this with five housemates I’d met four days earlier at LVC’s National Orientation in Chicago. The housemates, in the photo from left to right, are Cassandra, from Ohio via the University of Dayton; Adam, from Iowa via Luther College; Hannah, from Wisconsin via Augsburg College; Kristen, from Colorado via St. Olaf College; and Disket, from India via St. Olaf College (I’m second from the right). As the only Minnesotan in the group, I might be expected to be the resident expert on theRead More →

Decommissioning Parties: Saying Goodbye to Seattle and Tacoma

Pictured: Attendees of the 2018 Seattle Decommissioning Party In June, LVCers in the Pacific Northwest had ‘decommissioning’ parties for both Seattle and Tacoma, as we approach the end of our final year in the PNW. It was an important time to say good bye to the Sula and Mandela Houses and relive some LVC history.   LVC first sent Volunteers to Seattle in the Fall of 1995, and then to Tacoma the very next year. There was a wide range in attendance at both the parties in Tacoma and Seattle – guests ranging from current and former Volunteers and Supporters to an original pre-1995 LVC employee,Read More →

LVC17 Volunteer Spotlight: Brittany Dymm

Stopping to spend a year in the cornfields of the Midwest between undergrad and medical school doesn’t seem like the most exciting or appealing post-grad choice to everyone, but our Volunteers know beautiful opportunities when they see them. Brittany Dymm is a medical school bound LVC17 Volunteer this year serving in Omaha, NE at Hospice House – The Josie Harper Residence. Brittany is a recent graduate from the University of Notre Dame where she studied Biochemistry and Anthropology, and saw a service year with LVC as an opportunity for reflection and spiritual growth before applying for school. Brittany is serving as this year as theRead More →

2018 National Orientation: Just Speak!

Just Speak! Can you believe it? August is almost here again, which means a new cohort of Volunteers are coming in just two months!  This year’s Just Speak! portion of our 2018 National Orientation is open for anyone to attend. Just Speak! is a chance for church and community leaders to encourage, inspire and challenge our incoming Volunteers as they start their year seeking peace with justice. This year’s Just Speak! will be held on Saturday, August 11th at 4:30 PM at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, followed by dinner. One of our favorite Just Speak! speakers is coming back this year – JonathanRead More →

Before this Campaign Fails, We’ll All Go Down to Jail: LVC Alum Participates in Civil Disobedience

True followers of Jesus can’t help but walk in his footsteps – civil disobedience and all. Ben Brown came to LVC first as a Washington Semester intern from Wittenberg University, and then as a DC LVC Volunteer last year, serving at Faith in Public Life. Faith in Public Life (FPL) is a national network that unites clergy and faith leaders in shaping policy locally and nationally. This year, FPL is heavily engaged in Rev. Dr. William Barber’s revival of the Poor People’s Campaign, participating in acts of civil disobedience and protest across the country for a month of “Moral Mondays”, beginning in May. On May 21st,Read More →
