Spirituality, Vocation and Leaving Your Comfort Zone

Mae L’Heureux was born and raised in the Portland, Maine area. She graduated from Assumption College in Worcester, Massachusetts in May 2014 with a degree in Psychology and a minor in Human Services and Rehabilitation Studies. That summer, she joined LVC and served as a Volunteer with the 2014-2015 cohort, serving in Omaha, NE at NAMI Nebraska.   How did LVC impact your life? LVC taught me what matters. It taught me that you don’t grow if you don’t push yourself out of your comfort zone. It taught me that you have to fight hard for what you want, and learn to be okay with lettingRead More →

Reflections from LVC Alumna and Spirituality Mentor

Originally published in “The Door” by the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago (LSTC). LVC16 Volunteer Spotlight: Elanor Nolan

Bay Area LVCer Eleanor Nolan is working for the Disability Rights and Education Defense Fund in Berkeley, California. This photo is Eleanor at a protest event to raise awareness for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Becoming part of the community you serve is a huge component of an LVC volunteer year. Eleanor says: “Since starting my volunteer year, I’ve grown more comfortable with being vulnerable—while I’ve always been open with people, I’ve also never been too far from home and always knew I had someone close by I could depend on. There is a certain type of vulnerability that comes with moving to aRead More →

LVC16 Volunteer Spotlight: Hannah Uitenbroek

Milwaukee LVCer Hannah Uitenbroek is working at All Peoples Church as their Food Justice Organizer. Hannah shares the following about her year: “Working as the Food Justice Organizer at All Peoples Church, I have had the privilege of entering into a church community and the community of Milwaukee. I was dealing with my own anxiety and depression. At the church, the gospel music struck my heart and soul and people were kind to the new person that was assigned to them for a year. Two weeks into being in Milwaukee, the riots in Sherman Park occurred after Sylville Smith, another black man, was killed by police. ThingsRead More →
