Greetings from Casa Oscar Romero!

Greetings from our casa to yours! My name is Jamie and I’m one of the six LVCers living in Chicago in Casa Óscar Romero. My fellow housemates are Bre, Namarig, Levi, Weber, and Liam. We have had a great first few weeks together so far! Our house is located in the Logan Square neighborhood in Chicago, and our placement organizations are located all throughout the Chicagoland area. My placement is at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America’s Churchwide office near O’Hare. I am the assistant for the ELCA’s Justice for Women program. I absolutely love my placement and can’t wait for the upcoming months ahead.Read More →

Humor, Uncertainty, & Hammarskjöld

Three weeks ago, I boarded an afternoon Southwest flight and moved across the country. Thankfully, this was not the first time I had done such a move, from Wisconsin to Washington DC, having interned in the District during the summer of 2017. And I was even more grateful to not be alone. Whereas my last move was solo, now I was accompanied by 16 mostly strangers, all bound for DC. I say strangers, but maybe folks-I-met-five-days-ago-and-lived-with-in-close-quarters-and-did-a-lot-of-soul-searching-orientation-work-with is the more apt term – or “FIMFDAALWICQADALOSSOWW” for short. Lutheran Volunteer Corps Orientation had challenged my comfortability in many ways – from little to no introvert time toRead More →

Howdy from the Heartland!

The new members of Hillstrom House are stoked and ready to stir up a storm (in the spirit of the Stormchasers, the local baseball team) in Omaha, Nebraska! The five of us have settled well in our new home in North Omaha, a former convent complete with two kitchens, a small chapel, and a flourishing garden. After exploring the many secrets and amenities of the house, we got busy acquainting ourselves with the city. Old Market, which initially drew our interest, is a quaint commercial district downtown by the Missouri River, complete with rustic breweries, a free art gallery, a labyrinthine bookstore, and a weekendRead More →

Welcome to Winona!

Three weeks ago, I moved across the river from my hometown of St. Paul, into a 100-year-old house in Minneapolis. I did this with five housemates I’d met four days earlier at LVC’s National Orientation in Chicago. The housemates, in the photo from left to right, are Cassandra, from Ohio via the University of Dayton; Adam, from Iowa via Luther College; Hannah, from Wisconsin via Augsburg College; Kristen, from Colorado via St. Olaf College; and Disket, from India via St. Olaf College (I’m second from the right). As the only Minnesotan in the group, I might be expected to be the resident expert on theRead More →

Decommissioning Parties: Saying Goodbye to Seattle and Tacoma

Pictured: Attendees of the 2018 Seattle Decommissioning Party In June, LVCers in the Pacific Northwest had ‘decommissioning’ parties for both Seattle and Tacoma, as we approach the end of our final year in the PNW. It was an important time to say good bye to the Sula and Mandela Houses and relive some LVC history.   LVC first sent Volunteers to Seattle in the Fall of 1995, and then to Tacoma the very next year. There was a wide range in attendance at both the parties in Tacoma and Seattle – guests ranging from current and former Volunteers and Supporters to an original pre-1995 LVC employee,Read More →
