Volunteer Spotlight: Monica Sieg

As a new year with LVC begins, a new set of Volunteers bring new LVC stories, new backgrounds, and new experiences in service, intentional community, and social justice. We’re excited to spotlight our #LVC17 Volunteers! We’ll start off Twin Cities Volunteer Monica Sieg, who is serving Neighborhood House (in The Wellstone Center) in St. Paul, MN this year as a basic needs specialist. Monica will be working in both the Food Market and the different family centers, and in the last couple of weeks has helped with mass produce distributions, a school supply distribution, doing intake interviews with participants, learning about crisis center days and some personalRead More →

LVC16 Volunteer Spotlight: Erika Espey-Sundt

Erika Espey-Sundt, St. Olaf College grad, just finished up her LVC year living in Imani House in the Twin Cities. This is what she had to say about spending a year with LVC. “I just finished my year of service with LVC at Lutheran Social Service of MN – Camp Noah where I researched communities across the US affected by disaster and community trauma. Through outreach and continued conversation our team is working to host 15 camps nationwide this summer to work alongside community members in the long-term disaster recovery process. I was lucky to have the opportunity to attend one of our first camps of the season inRead More →

Reflections from LVC Alumna and Spirituality Mentor

Originally published in “The Door” by the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago (LSTC). Written by Amy Asendorf, M.Div Student and LVC alumna 2014-2015 This year, my Public Church Fellows placement has been with the Lutheran Volunteer Corps (LVC), serving as the Spirituality Mentor to the Chicago house. The three core tenants of the volunteer program are intentional community, justice work, and simple and sustainable living. LVC is also committed to “forming and strengthening alliances withRead More →

Catching Up With Alumni: Peter Spuit and Kaydee Kirk

Kaydee Kirk (’98-’99) and Peter Spuit (’99-’00) are two Lutheran Volunteer Corps alumni who live in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Kaydee is a graduate of Augsburg College and lived in Dag Hammarskjold House during her LVC year in Washington, D.C., and Peter is a graduate of Luther College and lived in Imani House during his LVC year in Minneapolis. We caught up with the two of them recently to hear what they’ve been up to and how LVC has continued to impact their lives. Both consider their service year with LVC to be transformational and greatly appreciate the many ways that LVC shaped them. Can you speakRead More →

Reflections on King’s Beloved Community from Nathan Detweiler

“You can do it! You can do it!” The encouragement pulsed through the crowd as a young woman pulled herself up onto a signpost above the heaving throngs. Successful, she reached into her knapsack and removed a black camera from within. Flushed with her acrobatic effort she carefully wedged herself up against the pole and pointed her camera at the exuberant crowd and snapped picture after picture. Later when she reviewed the pictures she no doubt saw a multicolored crowd made up of hundreds of thousands of smiling, cheering, diverse marchers – all making up the mosaic of the Women’s March in Washington DC.
