Just Speak 2016 – Part 3

We were excited to hold a Just Speak! event again at this year’s national orientation. This is a chance for church and community leaders to encourage, inspire and challenge our incoming Volunteers as they start their year seeking peace with justice. Each of the speakers also took up our theme of the inner work of social justice work. Our capstone speaker was the fabulous LVC alum Xavier Thomas, who works at All Peoples Church in Milwaukee, WI. We know that Xavier’s pledge to walk alongside the new Volunteers during their year of service is echoed by so many LVC alumni, and we thank you forRead More →

Just Speak 2016 – Part 1

We were excited to hold a Just Speak! event again at this year’s national orientation. This is a chance for church and community leaders to encourage, inspire and challenge our incoming Volunteers as they start their year seeking peace with justice. The first speaker was Rev. Dr. Reggie Williams, Assistant Professor of Christian Ethics at McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago. Dr. Williams dug in to understanding what racism is, and is not, with plenty of time for Q&A at the end. For more from Dr. Williams, check out his recently published book Bonhoeffer’s Black Jesus: Harlem Renaissance Theology and an Ethic of Resistance (Baylor University Press,Read More →

Outreach and Community in Omaha

Malachi Black served last year as an LVC Volunteer at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Omaha, Nebraska. When asked about why he was drawn to LVC after college, he said that he was searching for something more than just a job. He quotes, “I wanted to be challenged in every aspect of my life and the concept of intentional community really drew me into the program.” Currently, Malachi still serves on staff at Grace as Outreach Coordinator. Recently, he was interviewed on the podcast Things That Matter, which is the official podcast of the Nebraska Synod ELCA. You can listen to the podcast here, and read more from Malachi aboutRead More →
